Sun Catcher

$10.00 CAD

Ever wonder how the robin got such a bright red chest? Legends say that after a long, brutal and never-ending winter, humans began to lose hope. Wanting to help, the robin flew up to the warmest thing he knew of, the sun. But as he flew closer and closer, it grew hotter and hotter, and he became worried he'd burn up before ever bringing the warmth home. So, he grabbed a twig. Dipping the end of it into the light, he just needed to fly home fast enough to return the warmth back home. But it was so bright, and so hot, it was burning him. He kept flying. When he returned home with the fire the humans were overjoyed, the snow started to melt and spring would soon return. That's when they noticed his sacrifice, the robin's chest permanently stained bright red. He wore it like a badge of honour.
This story gets told in several forms. The way it's written here is of scottish origin, but often English descendants will say the robin brought fire to little baby Jesus in the barn. In the Inuit version of the story the robin keeps the fire in a young boy's igloo from going out.

The second design doesn't have such a story tied to it. It's for those who long for the sky above us, missing being able to see the stars during the day.
